Photoaging: Causes, Effects, And Treatments
As we head outdoors this summer, be sure to wear sunscreen for protection against the summer sun. But UV rays aren’t the only type of light you should worry about, and sunscreen isn’t the only tool that can help. Especially in summer, it is essential to protect against and reverse photoaging.



Photoaging is the aging effect that light damage has on skin. Light damage to skin cells can cause: 

  • Hyperpigmentation 
  • Deeper lines and wrinkles 
  • Dehydrated skin 
  • Eye bags and circles
  • Sunburn, irritation, and redness 

Each of these makes skin appear older than it is. To make skin look youthful and vibrant, photoaging needs to be prevented and treated.



Some types of light, such as UV, are more harmful to skin than others. These types of light have higher energy, penetrating into the skin and splitting molecules to form free radicals, which are highly reactive species that cause damage to cells, making skin look older.

Photoaging is not just caused by UVA and UVB, which are thought of as the usual culprits. An increasing body of research has shown that high-energy visible (HEV) light, or blue light, is another major contributor to photoaging.
